Street Sights is looking for a highly motivated individual who can oversee theproduction of a quality 12-16 page monthly street newspaper as well asfacilitate the development of a diverse volunteer staff of homeless andformerly homeless individuals, students, community members, and volunteerjournalists and photographers. The editor would have writing/journalism skills andsocial work, and/or organizing skills.
An ideal candidate will:
· Be highly motivated
· Possess excellent writing andpeople skills
· Work gracefully under pressure
· Be thoughtful about the issue ofhomelessness
· Understand how to empower othersto lead
· Be able to multi-task
About Us: Street Sights is the only newspaper of its kind in the state of RhodeIsland—a monthly street newspaper that covers news and issues related tohomelessness and housing, serving as the most current guide for local resourcesfor the homeless, and giving a voice to the homeless in the community. Street Sights is a more than a newspaper; it is a community.
The paper is beginning itsfourth year of operation and currently has a distribution of 3000. It isdelivered to soup kitchens, shelters, libraries, community centers, bookstores,and political offices around Rhode Island.
Time Commitment: Approximately20 hours/week
Compensation
At the current time, Street Sights is not able to pay itseditor and we are seeking an able volunteer. We hope that in time, a new editorwill work with stakeholders to develop a funding capacity and business modelthat will provide salaries. As the success of Street Sights depends upon building trusting relationships, aserious candidate should be able to commit to the positions for no less thanone year.
