Swearer Center for Public Service

Through programming, advising and fellowships, the Swearer Center engages the university in collaborations with local partners to strengthen communities and better prepare students to lead lives of effective action.

Community Partner

We believe that community knowledge can enrich the intellectual enterprise of the university and that the resources of the university can be a unique and powerful asset for the community. The Swearer Center's work would not be possible without deep, mutually beneficial and lasting relationships with community members and organizations.

While our partners range from resident leaders in Providence to international non-profits, they are all critical allies in advancing the twin goals of the Swearer Center: community impact and student learning. Our partners contribute to Brown students' personal, professional and academic growth by allowing them to participate in the complex and challenging process of improving their communities.

We are grateful for our partners' dedication, expertise and generosity: we couldn't do it without you!

The Swearer Center can help community organizations engage with the Brown community in a variety of ways.

Recruit Brown students for employment and volunteer opportunities with your organization.

  • Community Service Opportunities Fair (CSOF): Held in September and February of each academic year, the CSOF brings dozens of organizations to campus for them to meet and discuss their work with hundreds of Brown students and staff. Contact Amy Doyle for more information.
  • Some funding is available to support Brown student placements with community agencies. Funding is limited and application deadlines vary, so please review the information about the Swearer Center's Off-Campus Work-Study opportunities for important information about program eligibility and requirements and application timelines.

Promote your organization's special opportunities and events to the Brown community.

  • The Swearer Bulletin, published weekly during the academic year, includes announcements of community events, volunteer opportunities, and jobs. Email Swearer_Bulletin@brown.edu to join or post to the list.
  • Keep current on what's happening at the Center by checking out our News and Events pages. You can also submit events and news for posting on our website: email Amy Doyle with submissions.

Publicize non-profit employment opportunities to jobseekers throughout Rhode Island.

We can also assist with other opportunities. Please contact our staff to discuss how we can work with your organization.
