In 1492, the King and Queen of Spain asked a man named Christopher Columbus to sail on a boat to India. 

After sailing for a very long time, Columbus found land. He thought he was in India.

People already were living on this land. They were the Native Americans. But since Columbus thought he was in India, he called them Indians.

Some people say Christopher Columbus discovered America. We celebrate Columbus Day every October.
